The Objective of the H.R. Giger Museum in Gruyeres

There has been another new development at the museum.  The tenants whose presence had, until now, partially delayed the full realization of H.R. Giger’s project, the first Museum of the Fantastic in Switzerland, have finally moved out.  As a result, there is more space available for the museum.

A common misconception among many people is that the H.R. Giger Museum, Chateau St. Germain, in Gruyeres, is exclusively dedicated to the artworks of H.R. Giger.  Quite the contrary, a permanent exhibition of Giger’s collection of other internationally known artists has been on display in the top floor of the museum for nearly a year.  These are works that he purchased over a period of several decades.

Starting the Summer of the year 2000, the H.R. Giger Museum will become more than just a permanent home for Giger’s own art and his collection, it will also offer other artists of the Fantastic the opportunity to exhibit their works to the general public.  This museum is not to be regarded as an edifice of self-aggrandizement  but as a creation which embodies that for which H.R. Giger lives:  a bastion for Fantastic Art with a home in Switzerland.

This place will become a witness to a branch of 20th Century culture.  It will endure and tell fantastic tales.  A place where fantasy and dreams are encouraged and have the highest value.  The world has enough archives which store soul-deadening reality.

A Call to Arms

Since the opening of the museum in the Summer of 1997, H.R. Giger, as its primary supporter, has paid all the museum’s expenses from his own private funds.

This burden is not one that Giger can bear alone, in the long run, and until now, no outside sponsor has yet been found.

This is why we come to you, H.R. Giger’s fans from around the world.  We ask for your assistance to help maintain the H.R. Giger Museum, the first Museum of the Fantastic in Switzerland.

The amount of your contribution is entirely up to you.  No sum is too small.  Every franc and dollar is appreciated.

It is important that you know that any amount you send will only be used to cover the upkeep of the museum.  We will let you know how your money is being put to good use on H.R. Giger’s official website.  We will create a special book which will be kept on public display at the museum listing the names of each contributor who has helped the museum stay alive.
